How To Motivate Yourself When You Are Unmotivated

It's 2:00 AM on a Wednesday. Summer is looming and it's humid. I'm using my bundle of blankets as an improptu desk. Spotify is blasting at the same wavelength as my box fan. My bedmates are a pair of red sunglasses, crumpled clothes, my purse, charger cords AKA a mess. I'm sitting on an island of opportunities and I have absolutely no compass, no guiding passion, no motivated flame.

Here's How To Reignite Your Flame of Motivation:

1. Find New Favorites

Self-discovery often leads to creative impulses. Instead of dwelling upon things that you already love, explore something different. Swap out The Bachelorette for a few episodes of Game of Thrones. Instead of the same Chinese takeout, maybe try Japanese? Making these swaps will help you to learn about yourself and change your frame of mind. New mind -> motivation.

I swapped my hairstyle recently and somehow, that slight change caused a burst in my confidence and positive steps toward being motivated.

2. Catch Some ZzzzZZs

Grab your softest pillows. Make a nest out of blankets. Do whatever it takes to create the most comfortable sleeping zone. If your mind is unmotivated, refresh it by improving your sleep quality. From my professional napping experience, I have learned that sometimes sleep quality  sleep quantity.

3. Explore the Great Outdoors (Or Indoors!)

I may sound like a broken record, but nature inspires many people to pick up a pen or paintbrush and act upon creativity. Whether it is a piece of art, or a new resume, nature never fails to inspire. If nature is not your schtick, explore the great indoors. Visit a friend's house and notice aspects of it that you might not have perceived before, Explore untrodden lands and you will surely find something to suit your fancy. Maybe this is how you will find your new favorites!

4. Write (Or Draw) Your Life

It never hurts to pick up a pen and write about your life. Sometimes when I am unmotivated, I journal and ask myself what I want to do or where I want to go within my life. Tonight, I'm trying something new. You may have seen draw my life videos on YouTube. What about writing your life? I'm going to start from the beginning and write my life. Sometimes the past will motivate more than the future. What have you gone through to get to this point? What did you learn? How do you want to positively impact the world?

5. Love Your Progress As Much As Your Goal

Life is full of responsibilities and obligations. That's one thing I've picked up on as an adult. Your energy will always be divided in different ways. Do not be hard on yourself if you cannot do it all. We were not made to be perfect beings. Likeso, motivation is never straightforward. Gaining motivation is an uphill battle and sometimes it takes weeks to reach the peak. Appreciate every tiny step or thought pushing you toward motivation, even if you are not there yet. Keep pushing and one day you will stumble upon something inspiring, I guarantee it.
